Best Cloud Based Law Practice Management Software, Reviewed

CosmoLex

CosmoLex lists Launch at $49, Core at $99 and Pro at $129 per user per month billed yearly, or $59, $109 and $139 billed monthly. Its FAQ calls the product 100% cloud-based with no installation.

Trust accounting, trust compliance reporting, matter management and a client portal appear in every plan. Core adds LEDES and split billing, bank reconciliation, matter budgets, intake, document assembly and AI features for document summaries, plain-English filters and intake forms. Pro adds general ledger and payables, bank feeds, calendar sync and an open API.

Best fit: small firms that want billing and accounting together. Limitations: the 10-day trial allows one bank feed connection and excludes the CRM and LexShare/LexSign add-ons.

MyCase

MyCase prices per user per month: Basic $50, Pro $100 and Advanced $130 billed annually, or $60, $120 and $150 billed monthly. Basic covers case management, time entry, invoicing, trust accounting, online payments and a limited client portal.

Pro adds e-signature, document generation, workflows, intake forms with a legal CRM, two-way texting and a writing and document assistant. Advanced adds case and discovery assistants, advanced document automation, split billing and an open API.

Best fit: small firms that want billing, trust and client texting at a published price. Limitations: three-way trust reconciliation comes from a $39 per user monthly add-on on Pro and Advanced, and the discovery assistant includes 5,000 pages per user monthly, shared firm-wide. Guided implementation costs nothing extra; the trial runs 10 days.

MyCase pricing and plans

Rocket Matter

Rocket Matter’s plan cards list Essentials at $59, Pro at $95, Premier at $115 and Elite at $145 per user per month, paid annually. An FAQ on the same page says plans start at $49, so confirm the entry price. The FAQ also says the product runs in the cloud with nothing to install.

The page lists evergreen retainers, trust accounting and built-in payments for every tier, plus trust reconciliation and a client portal. It also lists free data migration and a 10-day free trial with no credit card.

Best fit: small and midsize firms that want trust accounting on every tier and migration included. Limitations: no AI features are listed on the pricing page. The Core CRM add-on costs $39 per user per month billed annually, is available only for Pro and Premier, and has a $399 setup fee and a three-user minimum. Website hosting adds $149 per month billed annually and a $599 setup fee.

PracticePanther

PracticePanther prices per user per month billed annually: Solo $49, Essential $69, Business $89 and Business Pro $114. Every plan includes matter management, time and expense tracking, a secure client portal, unlimited storage and iPhone, iPad and Android apps.

Solo adds PantherPayments and document templates. Essential adds custom fields and multiple bank accounts. Business adds two-way texting, intake forms, e-signature and LEDES billing. Business Pro adds trust accounting, operating accounting and general ledger tools.

Best fit: firms that want a portal and open pricing on every tier. Limitations: basic trust ledgers are documented in the entry plan, while the full trust and operating accounting suite is included at Business Pro; confirm which reconciliation tools you need. No AI features are listed on the pricing page, and court calendar rules need a separate LawToolBox subscription. The trial is 7 days.

LEAP

LEAP describes “one platform, one price” and lists no figures; you request pricing. The subscription includes case management, document automation, legal accounting and billing, legal AI tools, automatic timekeeping, unlimited document storage and a mobile app. LEAP says it is cloud based, hosted on Amazon Web Services, SOC 2 Type 2 certified and works with Microsoft 365.

Best fit: firms that want accounting, document automation and AI in one subscription. Limitations: a one-time implementation fee may apply, described as covering software installation, data migration and onboarding, with no amount listed. The page does not describe a client portal, and no free trial is listed.

Centerbase

Centerbase targets midsize firms. Its pricing page lists case management, billing and accounting, document management, calendaring, profitability reporting, a client portal, automated time capture and cloud and mobile access in the plan.

Centerbase Payments, powered by Stripe, lists a $19 monthly platform fee, a $4.99 monthly pass-through fee and processing fees on its payments page; the platform fee is waived for Legalfit firms. This conflicts with the pricing page’s no-platform-fee statement, so confirm charges in your quote. Onboarding is included and typically spans 12 to 14 weeks. Best fit: midsize firms wanting accounting and matters on one platform. Limitations: no public subscription price or free trial listed on the pricing page.

What to Look for in Cloud Based Law Office Management Software

  • Where it actually runs: CosmoLex and Rocket Matter say nothing needs to be installed. Smokeball’s Grow plan, by contrast, includes a native desktop application. Ask each vendor which parts are browser based.
  • Trust accounting: check which tier includes three-way reconciliation, and confirm your state bar’s recordkeeping rules before relying on any tool. This is general information, not legal advice.

What You’ll Really Pay

As arithmetic from the published prices, a three-user firm on yearly billing pays $147 per month on CosmoLex Launch, $147 on PracticePanther Solo, $150 on MyCase Basic and $177 on Rocket Matter Essentials. Three users on PracticePanther Business Pro would pay $342. Adding MyCase Accounting to three MyCase Pro users brings the total to $417. For invoicing features, see our guide to the best legal billing software.

FAQ

What is cloud based legal management software?

It is law practice management software that runs on the vendor’s servers and opens in a browser or app, so your firm installs little or nothing. It typically combines matters, documents, time tracking, billing and often trust accounting.

What is the best cloud based law practice management software for a small firm?

There is no single winner. On documented features and price, CosmoLex, MyCase and Rocket Matter fit small firms that want trust accounting in the entry plan. PracticePanther fits firms that want a portal in every plan. LEAP and Centerbase suit firms ready for a sales conversation.

Does cloud based law office management software include trust accounting?

Often, but not always at the cheapest tier. CosmoLex lists it in every plan, MyCase in Basic and Rocket Matter for every tier. PracticePanther documents basic trust ledgers in its entry plan and places its full accounting suite at Business Pro. Check three-way reconciliation specifically, since MyCase sells it as an add-on.

Is there free cloud based legal practice management software?

CosmoLex, MyCase, Rocket Matter and PracticePanther list free trials rather than ongoing free plans. MyCase gives 10 days and PracticePanther 7 days, both with no credit card. CosmoLex and Rocket Matter each advertise a 10-day free trial. LEAP and Centerbase list demos or pricing requests instead.
