The right Clio alternative depends on why you want to leave. If you want a published price on every tier, look at MyCase, PracticePanther and CosmoLex. If you want accounting and billing in one product, CosmoLex and PracticePanther Business Pro are the closest fits. If your firm lives in Word and Outlook, Smokeball is worth a demo. Midsize firms that want a configured rollout should talk to Actionstep or Filevine.

Clio Manage is still a strong baseline. Its pricing page, checked November 7, 2026, lists trust accounting and legal accounting tools on all four plans. The catch is that only Starter has a public price ($49 per user per month), and Starter leaves out the client portal, document templates and conflict checks.

This guide groups alternatives to Clio by the reason you are switching, using what each vendor documents on its own pricing and help pages. For the wider market, see our Legal Software Guide.

Shortlist: Clio Alternatives by Reason to Switch

These are fits based on documented features and price, not test winners.

  • Best fit if you want prices you can see: MyCase (Basic $50, Pro $100, Advanced $130 per user per month, billed annually), PracticePanther (see vendor site for billing terms) and CosmoLex ($49 to $129 per user per month, billed yearly).
  • Best fit if you want a client portal on the cheapest plan: PracticePanther and CosmoLex both list a client portal on every plan. MyCase Basic lists a limited portal.
  • Best fit for accounting in the same product: CosmoLex, which adds a general ledger, payables and bank feeds in Pro, and PracticePanther Business Pro with its PantherAccounting Plus suite.
  • Best fit for document-heavy firms in Microsoft 365: Smokeball, which lists Word and Outlook integration and advanced document automation.
  • Best fit for one bundled subscription: LEAP, which sells “one platform, one price” and names Clio among the systems it migrates from.
  • Best fit for midsize firms with complex workflows: Actionstep and Filevine, both sold by quote with structured implementation.

Why Firms Look for Clio Alternatives

We have not summarized forum complaints here, because one thread does not represent a user base. Instead, these are the documented plan limits on Clio’s pricing page that make a comparison worthwhile:

  • Only one public price. Starter is listed at $49 per user per month. Core, Signature and Elite show “Get pricing,” so budgeting above the entry tier means a sales conversation.
  • Starter is lean. It excludes the Clio for Clients portal, custom fields, document and matter templates, conflict checks, text-to-pay and accounting integrations with QuickBooks, Xero and TrustBooks. E-signature is capped at three, pooled across users.
  • AI starts at Core. Clio says “AI included on plans from Core up,” which covers automated billing, scheduling automation and AI-drafted client updates. AI performance reports start at Signature.
  • Intake costs extra below Elite. Online intake forms, appointment booking and intake workflows are “Contact sales for pricing” on Core and Signature and included only in Elite, which bundles Clio Grow.
  • Court rules are capped. Core includes three court calendaring jurisdictions per firm and Signature ten; extra jurisdictions cost $10 each per firm per month.

If those limits do not affect you, staying may cost less than migrating. If they do, the products below address them in different ways.

How We Evaluated

This is a research-based guide comparing products using their official pricing pages, documentation and help centers, checked November 7, 2026. We have not yet run our hands-on test scenario on these products; when we do, the results will be added and the page will be marked as tested. Our full method is on the how we test page.

The Best Clio Alternatives by Need

Clio Manage (the baseline)

Clio Manage has four plans: Starter, Core, Signature and Elite. Starter is $49 per user per month; the others are quote-based, and Elite combines Manage with Clio Grow. Every plan lists trust account management, trust and operating reconciliation, bank account sync, check printing, unlimited document storage, LEDES billing and payment plans.

Best fit: firms that want legal accounting built in and a large integration catalog. Limitations: the client portal, templates, conflict checks and AI start at Core, and data migration help is self-serve on Starter and guided on higher plans. Card payments are 2.95% (3.75% for Amex); eCheck and ACH are 1%. The trial is 7 days with no credit card.

MyCase: Best Fit for Published Pricing and Client Texting

MyCase lists Basic at $50, Pro at $100 and Advanced at $130 per user per month billed annually ($60, $120 and $150 monthly). Basic includes case and contact management, time entry, invoicing, trust accounting, online payments with next-day deposits and a limited client portal. Pro adds unlimited e-signature and document generation, workflows, intake forms with a legal CRM, two-way texting and a writing assistant.

Best fit: small firms leaving Clio over price visibility. Limitations: three-way trust reconciliation needs MyCase Accounting, $39 per user per month on Pro and Advanced. Split billing, conflict check tracking and the open API are Advanced-only. MyCase lists no setup fee or long-term contract and offers a 10-day trial with no card.

PracticePanther: Best Fit for a Portal on Every Plan

PracticePanther lists Solo, Essential, Business and Business Pro; see its pricing page for current rates and billing terms. Every plan includes matter management, time and expense tracking, a secure client portal and unlimited storage. Business adds two-way texting, intake forms, unlimited e-signature and LEDES billing.

Best fit: firms that want open pricing and a portal from day one. Limitations: the plan cards place trust accounting and operating accounting in Business Pro, and court calendar rules need a separate LawToolBox subscription. PracticePanther says a dedicated account manager handles migration.

CosmoLex: Best Fit for Accounting in One Product

CosmoLex lists Launch at $49, Core at $99 and Pro at $129 per user per month, billed yearly, and says yearly billing saves $120 per user. Trust accounting, compliance reporting, matter management and a client portal appear in every plan. Core adds bank reconciliation, LEDES and split billing, intake, document assembly and AI document summaries. Pro adds a general ledger, payables, bank feeds and an open API.

Best fit: firms that keep separate accounting software next to Clio. Limitations: the trial is limited to one bank feed and excludes the CRM and LexShare/LexSign add-ons. CosmoLex Pay is listed among the add-ons.

Smokeball: Best Fit for Word and Outlook Workflows

Smokeball sells Bill, Boost, Grow and Prosper+, all by quote. Bill covers invoicing, time tracking, online payments and trust accounting. Boost is browser-based and adds matter management, a client portal, e-signature and e-filing. Grow includes the native desktop app, advanced document automation and email management; Smokeball describes it as designed for firms with three or more staff.

Best fit: document-heavy firms. Limitations: no public prices; trust management and payments are marked “Fees apply,” and migration costs are confirmed in your quote.

LEAP: Best Fit for One Bundled Subscription

LEAP bundles case management, document automation, legal accounting, billing, automated forms, AI tools, automatic timekeeping and unlimited storage in one subscription. Its FAQ names Clio among the systems it migrates from, covering contacts, matter details, staff details and historical correspondence, and sometimes time entries and opening balances.

Limitations: no public price, a one-time implementation fee may apply, and some third-party integrations need separate subscriptions.

LEAP pricing

Filevine: Best Fit for Configurable Matter Workflows

Filevine tailors every plan to the organization. Packages cover matter management, document assembly, billing with online payments, intake, depositions and e-signatures, with options such as deadline management, analytics and a client portal. Certified implementation partners handle setup.

Limitations: no public price, and the pricing page does not mention trust accounting, so ask to see the trust ledger in a demo. The free LOIS Explore tier covers AI research and drafting, not case management.

Filevine pricing

Actionstep and Centerbase

Actionstep prices each module “per user plus implementation fees.” Practice Management includes matter management, a client portal, document assembly, workflow automation, billing and trust accounting; Builder, Capture, Trace (AI time capture) and Acumen are add-ons. Centerbase documents billing in its help center; confirm current subscription inclusions with the vendor.

Limitations: Actionstep does not list prices or a trial on its pricing page. Centerbase’s current pricing, subscription inclusions and onboarding schedule could not be verified from an accessible official page.

How to Switch from Clio

  1. Export your data. Clio’s help center says only administrators can bulk export. On the Exports page, download Excel-ready CSV files for calendar entries, communications, contacts, contact notes, matters, matter notes, tasks, time and expense entries.
  2. Capture balances. Run the Accounts Receivable report as CSV, and generate the trust management report before you move trust balances.
  3. Ask what the new vendor imports. PracticePanther, LEAP and Smokeball each describe migration help; confirm documents, trust history and time entries, and get any cost in writing.
  4. Reconcile trust before and after. Rule 1.15 of the ABA Model Rules covers safekeeping client property; check the recordkeeping rules that apply in your state. This is general information, not legal advice.
  5. Overlap subscriptions briefly. Keep Clio active until reports match in both systems.

FAQ

What is better, Clio or MyCase?

It depends on budget and plan needs. MyCase publishes all three prices and includes a limited client portal and trust accounting in Basic. Clio publishes only Starter’s $49 price, but lists legal accounting tools such as trust reconciliation and bank sync on every plan. MyCase’s three-way reconciliation needs its $39 Accounting add-on.

Is Clio better than Smokeball?

Neither is better for every firm. Clio publishes an entry price and offers a 7-day trial. Smokeball sells all four plans by quote and focuses on Word and Outlook integration, document automation and, in Prosper+, automatic time tracking. Firms that draft many documents in Microsoft 365 should demo Smokeball; firms that want to start self-serve may prefer Clio.

What is the best legal case management software?

There is no single best product. For solo and small firms, MyCase, PracticePanther and CosmoLex publish prices and include trust accounting at some tier. Midsize firms that need configured workflows can compare Actionstep and Filevine. Match the trust accounting tier, client portal and migration support to your firm before choosing.

Can I export my data from Clio?

Yes. Clio’s help center explains that administrators can export CSV files for contacts, matters, notes, calendar entries, communications, tasks, time and expense entries from the Exports page. Outstanding balances come from the Accounts Receivable report, and Clio advises generating the trust management report before migrating trust balances.
